Interactive sandbox with augmented reality technology
Problem
Many parents are concerned about their children being addicted to smartphones and tablets. It is very important at young age to practice fine motor skills that can be assured only while interacting with real objects.

Goal
To develop gaming platform based on the technology of augmented reality with three dimensional image projection.

To use brand new interface based on tactile feedback technology that allows kid to interact with real objects.

Development
As a work space we’ve used container with kinetic filler that is safe to use for kids and allows to create objects.

Work space gets digitized by 3D scanning technology and computer vision for detecting relief changes.

Content represents gaming and educational scenarios for kids based on Android. It gets projected onto three dimensional objects by technology of augmented reality.

Product design concept became a challenge as it has to comply with strict consumer-oriented requirements for compact size, light weight, affordable price and visual aesthetics.
Augmented reality
Interactivity is created by three dimensional image projection onto shapes. Kids make figures and shapes and then image gets projected on top of it through the use of augmented reality.

  • Assurance of projector's quick response to changes in shape of object
  • Precise rendering of three dimensional gaming content on the top of relief

Technologies of 3D scanning and machine vision were used as a solution, that allows to digitize three dimensional objects in real time
Various gaming content
Apart from hardware our team has developed learning games for kids

Games for kids of younger age focused on learning colour names and alphabet, while older kids can study English, planets and stellar constellations.

Android operating system allows users to install new games and delete the old ones, while installed ones can be update automatically.

Platform also allows to develop new games.
Kinetic sand
Kinetic sand is used as filler for ARIS. Its unique properties are ideally suited for solution: it is free-flowing material, that is ductile at the same time and allowing to create various shapes.

Moreover, it does not stick to hands and absolutely safe to use for children
Light weight and compact size
Comparing to large-scale competitors, that might weight up to 160kg, ARIS does not require a lot of space to be installed.

Compact size allows to unleash game potential and nicely fit into domestic interior as can be placed on the table.
Safety
ARIS developed as an easy and safe to use device for kids: they can learn and play without parents supervision.

Safe temperature of powerful projector is assured by cooling system that was developed by DI Labs for ARIS.
Summary
We developed device for balanced infant development, that combines traditional approach to fine motor skills training and modern technologies

In the process of development were successfully applied the following:
